Bunded Pallets - Control and contain spills
What are bunded pallets?
Bunded pallets, also known as spill pallets, containment pallets or drum bunds, are specially designed platforms with built-in containment sump. Drums, containers and IBCs which store liquids are designed to sit above the containment sump to prevent spills, leaks, or drips from contaminating the surrounding environment. Our range of bunded pallets are constructed from fully recyclable polyethylene which offers durability and resistance to corrosion, chemicals, and harsh Australian environmental conditions. In this article we will discuss the importance of using bunded pallets in the workplace and how they can help improve you organisations WHS requirements.
Why do businesses need bunded pallets?
In recent times there is increasingly a greater need for organisations to have a sound workplace health and safety process to protect staff and the greater environment. These are the key reasons bunded pallets are important in the Australian workplace:
Workplace Safety: Bunded pallets play a crucial role in enhancing workplace safety by reducing the risk of accidents and injuries. By containing spills and leaks, these pallets prevent slippery surfaces, chemical exposure, and potential slip-and-fall incidents. Additionally, bunded pallets facilitate proper storage practices, ensuring that hazardous materials are securely stored and organized, thereby reducing the likelihood of mishaps during handling or transportation.
Environmental protection: One of the primary advantages of bunded pallets is their ability to safeguard the environment. In the event of a spill or leak, the containment sump on the pallet captures the hazardous substance, preventing it from seeping into the soil, waterways, or groundwater. This proactive approach to spill containment helps businesses comply with stringent environmental regulations while minimizing the risk of pollution.
Compliance with Regulations: Australian workplaces must adhere to a myriad of regulations governing the storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous substances. Bunded pallets offer a practical solution for businesses to comply with these regulatory requirements. Whether it's the Environmental Protection Act, Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) regulations, or specific industry standards, utilizing bunded pallets demonstrates a commitment to regulatory compliance and responsible business practices.
Risk Management: Effective risk management is essential for businesses to protect their assets, reputation, and workforce. Bunded pallets serve as a proactive risk mitigation measure, reducing the likelihood of costly spills, accidents, fines, and legal liabilities. By investing in bunded pallets, businesses can minimize the financial and operational risks associated with environmental incidents and non-compliance penalties.
Which industries need spill pallets in Australia?
Several industries in Australia require bunded pallets to ensure safe storage and handling of hazardous materials. These industries include:
-
Chemical Manufacturing and Distribution: Companies involved in the production, storage, and transportation of chemicals require bunded pallets to prevent spills and leaks, which could lead to environmental contamination and safety hazards.
-
Oil and Gas: The oil and gas industry deals with various hazardous substances, including petroleum products and chemicals. Bunded pallets are essential for storing drums, containers, and barrels to prevent spills and protect workers and the environment.
-
Pharmaceuticals and Biotechnology: Businesses in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors often work with sensitive materials that require careful handling and storage. Bunded pallets help prevent contamination and ensure compliance with regulations governing hazardous materials.
-
Warehousing and Logistics: Facilities involved in warehousing and logistics handle a wide range of products, including hazardous materials. Bunded pallets are used to safely store and transport drums, barrels, and containers, reducing the risk of spills and accidents in the workplace.
-
Mining and Resources: The mining industry utilizes various chemicals and substances in its operations, such as acids and solvents. Drum bunds are necessary for storing these materials safely and preventing environmental contamination.
-
Manufacturing: Many manufacturing processes involve the use of hazardous materials, such as paints, solvents, and lubricants. Bunded pallets are crucial for containing spills and leaks, ensuring worker safety and compliance with regulations.
-
Agriculture: Agricultural operations often use pesticides, fertilizers, and other chemicals that require proper storage and handling. Bunded pallets help prevent contamination of soil and water sources, protecting both the environment and agricultural workers.
-
Transportation and Logistics: Companies involved in the transportation of hazardous materials, such as freight forwarders and shipping companies, use bunded pallets to comply with regulations and prevent spills during transit.
How big does the sump need to be on bunded pallets?
As a general rule for typical bunded spaces, the containment area should be at least 110% of the volume of the largest container. For example, bunded pallets with four 205L drums stored needs to have a sump capacity of at least 225L. It is generally excepted that it is unlikely that four drums would leak at the same time.
Which type of liquids can be stored on bunded pallets?
Our range of poly bunded pallets are suitable for a wide range of liquids such as water based liquids and most chemicals or acids. The polyethylene construction provides excellent corrosion resistance making them suitable for Class 8 corrosive substances. Australian Standards state that when storing Class 3 flammable liquids they must be stored on a steel bund to prevent the risks of fire and combustion.
What are the different sizes of bunded pallets?
Titan Safety stock a wide range of bunded pallets suitable for small quantities of drums or containers up to bunded pallets suitable for storing two 1000L IBCs. Our range of spill pallets are not only Made in Australia but are independently tested in a NATA lab for dynamic compression and heat resistance to make sure they stand up to harsh Australian conditions.
Our range includes 2 drum spill pallets, 4 drum spill pallets, IBC spill pallets and double IBC spill pallets. We also offer low profile bunded pallets which when joined together can create a bunded work platform.
