What is a Portable Gravity-Fed Eye Wash Station?
Portable eye wash stations are an important safety feature in workplaces where there is a risk of eye exposure to chemicals, particles, or other hazards. They allow workers to quickly and effectively irrigate their eyes in an emergency, reducing the risk of further injury or long-term damage.
A gravity-fed portable eye wash station is a portable emergency eye wash unit designed for remote areas with limited access to plumbed water. These units use gravity gravity to provide a steady low velocity stream of water to flush the eyes.
The design of gravity-fed portable eye wash stations is governed by the Australian Standard AS4775-2007, which outlines the requirements for emergency eye wash and shower equipment. This standard ensures that these units provide adequate water flow, coverage, and temperature to effectively decontaminate the eyes.
Key Features of Titan Safety portable eyewash stations:
- 34.1 litre (9 gallon) capacity
- Full tank streams water for 15 minutes at 1.5L per minute
- Lightweight, compact and portable with carry handle
- Manufactured to meet Australian Standard AS4775-2007
- Each unit is supplied with a 250ml bottle of eyewash preservative
- Additional eyewash preservative is available - supplied in a box of 4 x 250ml bottles
Why is a portable eyewash so important?
Chemicals in the eye cause serious damage within 1-5 seconds. Washing that has commenced within a few seconds can minimise eye damage.
Access to a portable eyewash on remote sites can provide uninterrupted eye washing for 15 minutes, which is critical in reducing the risk of significant eye damage before medical attention is available.
Australian Standards for Portable Eye Wash Stations
Titan Safety’s portable gravity fed eyewash units are fully compliant with Australian Standard AS4775-2007 - Emergency eyewash and shower equipment.
According to AS4775-2007, eye wash stations must be able to deliver a minimum of 1.5 liters per minute of clean, tepid water for a minimum of 15 minutes. The stations must be located within 10 seconds of potential eye hazards and be clearly marked with high-visibility signage.
Maintaining compliance with these eye wash station requirements is critical for workplace safety. Properly installed and regularly tested eye wash stations can mean the difference between a minor eye irritation and a serious, vision-threatening injury. Employers have a duty of care to protect workers from foreseeable risks through the provision of appropriate first aid equipment.
